General questions for a thesis work

Hi,
I’m a student at “Università di Napoli Federico II”. I’m working on a thesis, regarding surgical simulation. I would be very grateful if you could give me some informations about SOFA.

Which kind of models for deformable object are available in SOFA? (Mass-Spring Model, Finite Elements, linear finite elements, co-rotational finite elements, non-linar finite elements, Boundary element or others)

What are the main SOFA applications? (videogame, animation, physical simulation, surgical simulation or others)

Does SOFA use any graphic libraires? If yes, which one?

Dear Francesco,

Thank you for your interest in SOFA.
Let me answer to your questions about our framework.

The models for deformable object available in SOFA are:

• mass-Spring Model,
• Finite Elements,
• linear finite elements,
• co-rotational finite elements,
• non-linar finite elements are also implemented but in private plugins. The access to these codes is therefore restricted but depending on your need, we can establish some partnerships,

In addition, you can find a wide range of boundary conditions, constraints in SOFA.

The main applications are :

• the medical applications (simulation of a specific organ, or a specific procedure)
• and the multi-physics applications (mechanics, thermodynamics, electrics..)

Finally, regarding the graphics library, we are using mainly OpenGL. However, I am no expert in this part of SOFA.

In the future, the community will be here to assist you with SOFA for your developments.

Thank you for the answers. I’m working on a thesis about surgical simulation. At this time I’m searching for a physics engine and SOFA is a possibility. In the simulation, I have to implement also an haptic rendering, the road is still long.
