Yes, the existing tutorial or example .scn files work perfectly.
I create my own .scn file on command line:
then I open it using TexEdit application of Mac Os.
Then I just write the same context of an existing .scn file (such as caduceus.scn) in it. Then when I run this new scene, it crushes.
I tried to use modeller as well. But when I run it, it didn’t show any object that I put in. It was just an empty scene.

I am not sure if I understood correctly but by topological change do you mean change in number of vertices in mesh or edges etc.?
